Chance Leslie was Rudyard Shelton's best friend in third grade.
Chance grew up in a poorer family than Shelton, and never earned particularly high grades. When a local reading contest promised a bicycle to whoever read the most books, Chance worked really hard to win the free bike. Shelton ended up winning the contest by turning in reports for books he'd only watched the movie.
Chance never learned his friend had cheated him out of victory and moved away shortly thereafter, and Shelton forever felt guilty about what he did. The two never saw each other or communicated after that. (Ask the Characters, The Approaching Light)
Trivia[]
- Chance Leslie is only mentioned in the non-canon short story The Approaching Light, but in Ask the Characters Shelton confirms this story from his childhood to be true.
- This makes Chance the only character in Darwin's Soldiers who originated in the Insane Cafe universe.
